About
Founded in the late 1990s, Kelola Foundation has 26 years of experience strengthening Indonesia’s arts ecosystem through capacity building, grant making, and international collaboration. Recognizing gaps in professional competencies among artists and cultural practitioners, Kelola initiated a series of workshops covering arts and cultural organisation management, project management and stage management, directing, lighting, and curatorial writing. Over more than a decade, 56 workshops were held in 20+ cities, involving local and international experts and reaching 1,200+ artists and practitioners from emerging to mid-career levels. More than 210 arts managers and curators participated in the Nusantara Internship and International Residency Programs, and three arts management manuals were published to broaden access to knowledge.
To address limited funding in the performing arts, Kelola developed grant programs for artists and arts communities. By 2020, 400+ artists and arts groups received support, while 59 women artists benefited from multi-year mentorship, research, and grants through Empowering Women Artists and Women’s Creative Grant programs.
Kelola’s programs have grown in quality, diversity, and reach, supported by sustained networks with global partners, including Asialink Centre (Australia); Asian Cultural Council, Ford Foundation, and World Bank (USA); HIVOS and the Embassy of the Netherlands; CKU Denmark; First State Investments Indonesia, and various NGOs and individual donors.
Kelola’s vision is a sustainable Indonesian arts ecosystem producing high-quality, globally relevant works. All initiatives focus on capacity strengthening and knowledge dissemination, generating positive, multilayered impact.
In recognition of this work, Kelola’s co-founder Amna S. Kusumo received the 3rd John D. Rockefeller Award (2014, New York), “in recognition of her extensive achievements as a visionary arts leader, as a pioneer in the field of arts management in Southeast Asia, and as an advocate bringing worldwide appreciation for the arts of Indonesia, and for her efforts on behalf of cultural exchange.
