Aastrika Foundation is a non-profit, under the Nilekani Philanthropies umbrella and was established in 2019 by Dr. Janhavi Nilekani with a belief that all child-bearing women should have access to timely, high-quality maternity care and to core rights, including, but not limited to, privacy, the companionship of a loved one, informed consent regarding medical interventions, and an abuse-free birthing experience. The organisation has three key focus areas, which are listed below. - Health systems strengthening through capacity building initiatives for all cadres of healthcare workers - Establishing a cadre of professional midwives by supporting the GOI’s Nurse Practitioners in Midwifery (NPM) program in the state of Karnataka - Creating demand for high quality care among governments, policy-makers, and society
