GOONJ is a voluntary charitable non-profit institution and works to address basic but often ignored issues related to disaster relief/rehabilitation, water, sanitation, agriculture, environment, education, livelihood, etc.
About
GOONJ (meaning "an echo") was founded in 1999. Over the past decade (2014-2024), we have worked across 31 states and Union Territories of India, impacting more than 18 million people, facilitating over 96,000 community development projects, and mobilizing over 63 million kg of materials addressing some of the most basic yet long-neglected issues - including holistic rural development, water, sanitation, agriculture, education, local infrastructure, and disaster relief.
At the heart of our work is the idea that underutilized material can be a powerful tool for change. Through the mindful collection and redistribution of urban surplus - clothing, utensils, learning materials, hygiene products, and more - we build a bridge between urban abundance and rural realities, repositioning what is often discarded into a resource for resilience. GOONJ’s model builds on the philosophy of a circular economy, creating a barter system between two new currencies: the surplus materials from cities and the wisdom, knowledge, and effort of rural communities.
By involving communities in designing and implementing solutions using their own resources and ingenuity, we aim to foster development with dignity, not dependency.
Vision
Goonj aims to build an equitable relationship of strength, sustenance, and dignity between the cities and villages, using under-utilized material as a tool to trigger development with dignity.
